A backlink audit helps you identify links that could expose your website to search penalties, separate them from harmless spam, and decide what deserves action. Start with Google Search Console and a backlink crawler, then assess link patterns, placement and acquisition history rather than treating every low-quality domain as a threat.
The goal is not to achieve a perfect tool score or remove every unfamiliar link. It is to find evidence of manipulative link building, investigate any manual action, and protect useful editorial links while documenting your decisions.
1. Establish whether there is a genuine risk
Before reviewing individual backlinks, establish why you are investigating them. A sudden ranking decline does not prove a link problem. Technical changes, lost content, stronger competitors and shifts in search intent can produce similar symptoms.
Open Google Search Console and check the Manual Actions and Security Issues reports. An unnatural-links manual action calls for a different response from a third-party tool reporting a high toxicity score.
- Manual action present: read its scope and examples, investigate the relevant links, and prepare a documented remediation plan.
- Traffic loss without a manual action: compare affected pages and queries, check indexing, and review recent website changes before blaming backlinks.
- No performance issue: prioritise known paid placements, link exchanges and previous agency activity rather than random scraper links.
Record important dates: migrations, link campaigns, redirects and changes of SEO provider. For example, if an Islamabad business bought hundreds of keyword-rich placements before a decline, that campaign deserves investigation. Timing alone, however, does not establish causation.
2. Build a usable backlink inventory
Export external links from Search Console and supplement them with data from a crawler such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Majestic. Search Console is useful first-party evidence, but its reports are not a complete inventory. Commercial crawlers also have different coverage and discovery dates.
Combine exports in a spreadsheet. Remove duplicate source-and-destination pairs, but retain domain-level counts. A single domain linking from 5,000 pages may represent one sitewide placement rather than 5,000 independent recommendations.
Your working sheet should contain:
- Source URL and referring domain.
- Destination URL and its current status.
- Anchor text and surrounding topic.
- Link attributes, including sponsored, nofollow or ugc where available.
- First-seen date, last-seen date and whether the link remains live.
- Placement type, ownership clues and known acquisition method.
- Decision, supporting evidence and next action.
Group destinations by commercial importance. Links pointing to your homepage, major service pages and high-revenue landing pages usually deserve earlier attention than links to an obsolete announcement.
Set a realistic scope before commissioning work. An initial review might sample 50 to 100 referring domains; a site with a manual action needs broader investigation. Compare quotes in PKR, USD, GBP or AED against the review scope, manual checks and remediation support, not simply the number of exported rows.
3. Judge patterns, not isolated metrics
The most useful backlink audit evaluates how and why links exist. Domain authority scores and toxicity labels can help prioritise inspection, but they are not Google penalties or definitive measures of risk.
Check relevance and editorial purpose
Ask whether the source page would reasonably mention your business without an SEO incentive. A Lahore property publication linking to an Islamabad developer may make sense. An unrelated article containing several commercial links inserted into awkward sentences deserves closer inspection.
Geography alone is not a risk signal. A Pakistani software business serving UK customers can legitimately attract British links. Likewise, a foreign-language mention is not automatically suspicious.
Inspect anchors and placement
Look for repeated exact-match commercial anchors across unrelated sites, particularly when they lead to the same sales page. There is no universal safe percentage, so compare patterns with your brand, campaign history and business model.
Review whether links appear inside useful editorial content, author biographies, comments, templates or footers. Sitewide links can be legitimate, but paid keyword-rich footer placements across multiple domains warrant investigation.
Look for coordinated acquisition
- Multiple websites publishing near-identical articles with the same anchors.
- Pages selling followed links across unrelated commercial niches.
- Link networks with shared templates, contact details and repetitive outbound-link patterns.
- Paid articles that lack appropriate sponsored or nofollow attributes.
- Expired domains repurposed mainly to pass ranking signals.
No single clue proves manipulation. Shared hosting, a small audience or a basic design can occur on perfectly legitimate websites. Record corroborating evidence before classifying a domain as high priority.
4. Assign actions and use disavowal cautiously
Place reviewed links into four groups: keep, monitor, request correction or removal, and consider disavowal. This makes the findings actionable without encouraging indiscriminate deletion.
- Keep: genuine editorial mentions, relevant directories, supplier references and useful industry coverage.
- Monitor: scraper copies, unexplained links and weak pages without evidence of your involvement in manipulation.
- Request correction or removal: links you commissioned that violate Google's spam policies. For advertising placements, adding an appropriate sponsored or nofollow attribute may be suitable.
- Consider disavowal: substantial artificial-link patterns associated with a manual action, or a credible likelihood of one, that cannot reasonably be resolved at source.
Google can ignore many spammy links automatically. Its disavow tool is an advanced option, not routine housekeeping. Do not upload a tool-generated list solely because domains received low scores.
If disavowal is justified, verify every entry and download any existing file first. A new upload replaces the previous file for that property, so preserve entries that remain necessary. Use domain-level entries only when the evidence supports excluding the whole domain.
Keep outreach records and do not pay removal fees demanded by suspicious website owners. For a manual action, the reconsideration request should explain the problem, corrective work and prevention measures. Disavowing links alone does not constitute a reconsideration request.
5. Turn findings into a repeatable control
Finish your backlink audit with a short decision report, not just a spreadsheet of red flags. Summarise the patterns found, examples checked, outstanding uncertainties and actions assigned to named team members.
Review important new referring domains monthly during active campaigns and conduct a broader review quarterly. Increase scrutiny after changing suppliers, acquiring a domain or discovering an unnatural-link manual action.
- Require suppliers to disclose placements and acquisition methods.
- Avoid packages promising fixed quantities of followed links without editorial scrutiny.
- Separate paid promotion from editorial link earning.
- Track useful referrals, relevant coverage and search performance, not only link counts.
For businesses comparing SEO support in Pakistan or overseas, ask whether link review, outreach and remediation are included in the quoted scope. SEOISB, part of HA Technologies in Blue Area, Islamabad, can discuss these requirements alongside ongoing SEO planning.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high toxicity score mean Google has penalised my site?
No. It is a third-party assessment. Check Search Console for manual actions and investigate the underlying links before deciding whether intervention is necessary.
Should I disavow every spam backlink?
No. Unsolicited spam frequently requires no action. Reserve disavowal for substantial artificial-link problems where Google's guidance supports using it, ideally with experienced review.
How soon will rankings improve after removing risky links?
There is no guaranteed recovery timetable or ranking increase. Recrawling, link processing and any manual-action review take time, and other issues may also affect performance.
