How to Rank in the Map Pack in Multiple Cities

Learn how to rank in the map pack across multiple cities with eligible Google profiles, useful location pages, reviews and city-level tracking.

Published 31 May 2026 · 6 min read · Target keyword: multi location local SEO

To rank in the map pack in multiple cities, build a strong local presence around each genuine, eligible business location. Successful multi location local SEO combines accurate Google Business Profiles, useful city pages, consistent business information and reviews from real customers. Creating profiles for cities where you have no qualifying presence is not a shortcut.

Distance still matters. A business in Islamabad cannot reliably rank across Lahore simply by adding Lahore as a service area. Start by separating cities where you have legitimate locations from cities you serve remotely, then choose the right search strategy for each.

1. Establish which locations qualify for a profile

Google’s local results primarily consider relevance, distance and prominence. You can improve relevance and prominence, but you cannot optimise away the physical distance between a searcher and your business.

Before building profiles, audit every proposed location against Google’s current Business Profile eligibility rules. Typically, a qualifying business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Online-only operations do not qualify simply because they have customers in several cities.

  • Customer-facing premises: Use a real location with permanent signage, staffed by your business and able to receive customers during published hours.
  • Service-area operations: If you visit customers and do not receive them at your base, hide the address. Set accurate service areas rather than listing every commercially attractive city.
  • Multiple service bases: Separate profiles may be appropriate for genuinely separate locations with their own staff and service areas, subject to Google’s rules.
  • Virtual offices: A rented postal address does not establish eligibility. Co-working premises must meet Google’s specific requirements, including staffing and signage.

For example, a plumbing company with staffed bases in Islamabad and Lahore may qualify for two profiles. An Islamabad plumber occasionally accepting Lahore jobs should not create a Lahore profile using a friend’s address. Target that market through an honest service page or paid campaign instead.

2. Build consistent, location-specific Google profiles

For multi location local SEO, consistency means shared brand standards, not identical information everywhere. Each profile should accurately describe its own branch, opening hours, services and customer contact details.

  1. Use the real business name. Do not append “best dentist Lahore” unless that wording genuinely forms part of the established business name.
  2. Select the most accurate primary category. Add secondary categories only for services the branch actually provides. Review category availability in your market.
  3. Enter precise details. Check the address, map pin, telephone number and regular hours. Update special hours for Eid, public holidays and temporary closures.
  4. Link to the matching location page. A Lahore profile should normally lead to the Lahore branch page rather than a homepage requiring further navigation.
  5. Add useful evidence. Upload current photographs of the entrance, signage, interior and team, with permission where needed. Describe services accurately.

Maintain a central register containing each profile’s owner, verification status, page URL and last review date. Keep ownership under a business-controlled account and grant agencies appropriate access rather than handing over sole control. Resolve duplicates through Google’s processes instead of creating replacement profiles whenever access becomes difficult.

3. Create city pages that help customers choose

A location page should answer practical questions that a generic service page cannot. Changing “Islamabad” to “Lahore” in otherwise identical copy produces weak pages and can create doorway-page risks when the pages exist mainly to capture similar searches.

For each genuine branch, include the following:

  • The branch name, accurate address, telephone number and opening hours.
  • Services available there, including meaningful differences between locations.
  • Directions, nearby landmarks, parking and accessibility information where relevant.
  • Original photographs and details of the team serving that location.
  • A clear booking, quotation or contact process.
  • Local questions, such as delivery coverage, call-out charges or appointment availability.

A clinic in Blue Area, Islamabad could explain its building entrance and parking arrangements. Its Lahore page could describe different clinic hours and practitioners. These details help visitors act and make the pages genuinely distinct.

Use a logical structure such as /locations/islamabad and /locations/lahore, accessible through a location directory. Add accurate LocalBusiness structured data where appropriate, but do not expect markup to overcome distance or guarantee map rankings.

If you serve a city without premises there, say so clearly. Explain coverage and realistic travel arrangements without inventing an address. Such pages can compete in organic results, but they do not create eligibility for an additional map listing. SEOISB’s local SEO service details are available at /services-local-seo.

4. Develop reviews and local authority branch by branch

Reviews help customers assess individual locations. Build a repeatable request process after completed appointments, purchases or jobs, using each branch’s own review link.

Ask customers neutrally for an honest review. Do not offer discounts, request only positive feedback or route unhappy customers away from public reviews. Avoid scripts that pressure people to repeat city names or service keywords.

  • Set a service-based trigger: Send a request after the job is completed, not before delivery.
  • Assign responsibility: Give each branch a named person to monitor and respond to feedback.
  • Respond constructively: Address concerns without disclosing private customer information.
  • Measure participation: Track requests sent and reviews received rather than imposing a fixed five-star target.

Next, check business details across relevant directories, trade bodies and established local listings. Prioritise accuracy and usefulness over buying hundreds of citations. Local authority can also come from legitimate supplier relationships, community activities or industry contributions that earn relevant mentions and links. Never buy a supposed guaranteed map-pack position.

5. Measure each city and prioritise investment

A useful multi location local SEO report separates branches, search terms and lead quality. One manual search from your office is not a reliable picture of visibility across a city.

  1. Record a baseline. Measure local rankings across a consistent geographic grid around each eligible branch, using the same terms and settings.
  2. Track customer actions. Monitor available Business Profile performance metrics, website enquiries and bookings. Add UTM parameters to profile website links for clearer attribution.
  3. Assess commercial outcomes. Separate qualified enquiries from spam, existing-customer calls and requests outside your coverage.
  4. Review monthly. Compare similar periods and account for seasonal changes before attributing every movement to SEO.

Prioritise eligibility problems, incorrect details and missing branch pages before expanding content. Then improve locations with weak reviews, poor conversion or incomplete service information.

For initial planning, a small two-to-three-location campaign typically needs roughly PKR 80,000–250,000 per month, depending on competition, content and technical work. This is an indicative planning range, not an SEOISB quote or ranking guarantee. Compare deliverables and reporting scope through /seo-packages rather than choosing on price alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can one Google Business Profile rank in several cities?

Yes, it may appear across nearby areas when relevant and competitive. However, visibility varies by searcher location and competition. Adding service areas does not guarantee rankings in those cities.

How long does multi location local SEO take?

Typically, allow three to six months to evaluate meaningful progress, with longer timelines in competitive markets. Corrections may help sooner, but distance and eligibility still limit potential reach.

Do I need a separate website for every city?

Usually not. One well-structured website with useful branch pages is easier to maintain and measure. Separate websites rarely solve weak profiles, thin content or a lack of genuine local presence.
